Steve Martin has hung up his rugby boots ahead of the 2008/09 season.
The lock who turned 34 last week made his Neath debut way back in 1993.
Nicknamed Trapper Steve works for family business Sportec, has previously played for Llanelli RFC and was a key part of the Newport side that clinched the league titles in 2003/04.
Since returning to the Gnoll from Rodney Parade, Martin has captained the Welsh All Blacks for two seasons and won a record four league titles and the Konica Minolta Cup, making him the only semi pro player to pick up five league winners medal since the league was formed.
Quote from Steve Martin:
"Due to an on going ankle injury, I have been advised to retired. At the start of pre season with a fresh mind I still felt that I could contribute to the squad with my experience, but the medical advice and the reaction in training with my ankle I must coincide that the demands to play at this level are too much. "
"I've spoken the Rowland and Patrick and though disappointed they were supportive and understood my decision to retire. May I take this opportunity too thank the players & coaches (past and present) whom I have played with in my career. "
"In the 15 years that I have been associated with Neath RFC there have been many high and lows. I have made many friends in this time and it's the players I will miss most. The club are heading in the right direction, have great vision in Rowland, Pat, Arwel and Lee Beach, I wish the boys well in the coming season. It was fitting to have my final appearance against St David's whom I made my debut for Neath back in 1993."
"As for me having some spare time it will be unusual, but I have a young family so think my wife has plan's for me!!
I would like to go into coaching at some point but not immediately.
Rugby as been my main focus for many years, so without it I can concentrate on my future."
Quote from Neath Chairman Geraint Hawkes:
Steve martin has achieved something unique in premiership rugby which I doubt will be equalled. His commitment drive professionalism and enthusiasm has deservedly gained him renowned respect and credibility throughout the game. He has been a true role model for youngsters to emulate. We are sorry to see Steve go and thank him for the part he has played in the continued success which is Neath rugby.
Quote from Director of Rugby Rowland Phillips:
Steve Martin has been a fantastic player for Neath Rugby over the years and we are truly sorry to see him leave. However he will always be a part of this club and im sure I can speak for the coaching staff and players in saying that I look forward to seeing him supporting us at the Gnoll during the season!
