Neath Boys Complete Great Wales Run For Snid

28th July 2008

While the whole of Wales basked in a mini heatwave yesterday Neath Rugby squad members descended on Cardiff Bay to take part in the Great Wales Run 10k to raise money for the Gareth Jones Trust Fund.

Over 3,000 people took part in the race, with Neath and Pontypridd rugby players taking part to raise funds for the young children of Snid.

After running the London Marathon two years Neath Director of Rugby Rowland Phillips began the race in pole position amoungst the Elite racers, but was soon overtaken by the younger, fitter Neath boys who were determined to put in good times.
In the sweltering heat all Neath players finished the race in good time, Matthew Nuthall was the first Neath player home, completing the race comfortably, in 46minutes.

However Nuthall was pipped to the post by Pontypridd Coach Paul John who completed the challenge in 44 minutes and clinched the Neath v Ponty race battle for the Sardis Road outfit.

Prop Craig Mitchell who has been suffering with a groin injury of late provided the best entertainment of the morning when he decided to walk the race to avoid further injury.
On the final stretch Mitch went head to head with a lady dressed as a giraffe but managed to just about beat her after she stopped off for a wee!

With sponsorship money still pouring in for the race we will have to wait until the end of this week before we will know how much has been raised by the players for the fund.
